Sternkrabbelstube

Stellar nursery: Hundreds of new-born stars, never before seen, light the tips of ghostly pinnacles of gas and dust in an image taken by the Spitzer Space Telescope and released 9 November. Astronomers suspect that the young stars formed when radiation and wind from a massive parent star blasted clouds of gas and dust outward, leaving denser materials behind. Spitzer's infrared eyes were needed to penetrate all the surrounding dust and get a clear bead on the solar babies. (Photo: NASA/JPL-Caltech/Harvard-Smithsonian CfA/ESA/STScI)
